This happened to me years ago. I connected it to a USB enclosure with its own power supply, not bus-powered, and for some reason it spun up long enough for me to get most of the critical stuff. Total long shot, but sometimes a stable power source makes a difference.

My Canon did this last month! Turns out its IP address changed, and my PC was still looking for the old one. A full router reset (not just power cycle) fixed it for me.
