Love the post! One minor correction: 'do's' should ideally have an apostrophe for clarity, as in 'do's and don'ts'.
What are some common pitfalls people encounter when trying to define their brand voice?
One common pitfall, @13, is trying to appeal to absolutely everyone. You end up sounding like nobody.
How do you measure the effectiveness of a brand voice? Beyond anecdotal feedback, I mean.
We use a tool called Tone Analyzer from IBM Watson for a quick sentiment check on large text blocks. Not perfect, but helpful.
Great point about customer service interactions! It's not just marketing copy.
Never thought about it extending to customer service. That's a huge blind spot for many companies.
I'm not sure defining target audience *first* is always the best approach. Sometimes the voice emerges organically and then you find your audience.
Totally disagree with @6. Without knowing who you're talking to, how can you know *how* to talk? It's fundamental.
Our brand voice started off 'playful and approachable' but gradually became 'sarcastic and edgy'. Now we're trying to dial it back, it's hard!
I've always struggled with maintaining consistency across different platforms. Does anyone have a good template for a brand voice guide?
For templates, check out the 'Brand Style Guide' examples on HubSpot or Canva. They often include voice sections.
What about when your target audience is really broad? How do you keep it cohesive without being generic?
To @3: We had a similar issue. We ended up segmenting our audience and creating slightly different 'personas' for our voice, but all within a core framework. It's tricky but can work.
I totally agree about the 'do's and don'ts' examples. We found that much more useful than abstract guidelines when training our team.
