Which Cloud Provider for a Small Startup?

We're currently a team of 5, focused on a web-based SaaS product, expecting moderate traffic initially but hoping for rapid scaling. We're weighing options between AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Cost-effectiveness, ease of management for a small team, and access to AI/ML services are our primary concerns. We don't have dedicated DevOps staff yet, so user-friendly interfaces and strong documentation are crucial. Any personal experiences or recommendations, especially regarding initial setup and cost optimization strategies for a lean operation, would be incredibly helpful. I've heard good things about AWS Lightsail for ease of use, almost like a simplified VPS but with AWS backing. Could be a good starting point before diving into full EC2.

What about building in a multi-cloud strategy from the start? It's harder, but reduces risk and gives negotiation power.

For cost-effectiveness, remember to factor in data egress charges. They can really add up, especially if your app involves a lot of file transfers or streaming.

The `stro` at the end of your post cut off... strong what? Security? Support? Both are vital!

I'd suggest setting up a simple MVP on each provider's free tier for a week or two. Get a feel for the UI and basic workflows. Hands-on experience trumps all advice.

One underrated factor: the job market for cloud talent. AWS has the largest pool of skilled engineers, which is a plus if you plan to hire.

Has anyone used GCP's Anthos for hybrid cloud? We might need that flexibility down the line.

We chose AWS mainly because of the sheer breadth of services. It meant we wouldn't outgrow it quickly, which was a worry.

Don't underestimate the importance of good support. AWS support tiers can get expensive, but when you're stuck, it's priceless.

Look into the 'lift and shift' vs 'cloud native' approach. For a startup, cloud native is almost always better long-term, despite the initial re-engineering.

What about security? All major providers have robust security, but implementing it correctly is on you. Make sure you understand IAM.

A key thing to consider is vendor lock-in. While not entirely avoidable, try to use services that are somewhat portable, like Kubernetes or standard databases.

You don't need dedicated DevOps. That's a luxury for later. Focus on managed services that minimize admin work.

Honestly, for a small team and rapid scaling, focus on managed services. The less infrastructure you have to touch, the faster you can iterate on your product.

I hear Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) has some very competitive pricing for compute and database services. Worth a look?

We're a two-person dev team and found AWS Amplify super helpful for getting our web app off the ground quickly. It handles a lot of the backend complexity.
