Just created a new project and this post came at the perfect time. Saved me a lot of headaches later, thanks!
My biggest problem is team members duplicating pages instead of reusing components. Any tips on enforcing better component usage?
I disagree a bit with 'linking external assets'. For me, everything needs to be in Figma for a single source of truth. External links just add another point of failure.
The linking external assets part is something I haven't tried yet. Any examples of when that's particularly useful?
Speaking of consolidation, how do you handle style guides across multiple designers without constant drift? We have a nightmare with conflicting text styles.
The trick for style guides (comment #6) is clear ownership and a review process. One person is the gatekeeper for global styles, others submit proposals.
Flattening complex groups can be a double-edged sword. You lose editability, so only do it when you're 100% sure it's final. I prefer to keep things editable until absolute last minute.
Good point about flattening. I've been burned by that before. Maybe a better tip is to create a 'finalized' page within the file for flattened versions.
For image compression, I've had great success with 'TinyImage'. It's a lifesaver for those heavy hero sections.
Yeah, TinyImage is decent! Also check out 'Downsize' for a quick, in-plugin solution.
Could someone clarify what 'linking external assets' means in Figma? Are we talking about embedding links or something else entirely?
It means using assets stored elsewhere (e.g., cloud storage, DAM) and referencing them, rather than embedding the full image data directly in Figma. This can reduce file size, but as commenter #10 noted, introduces external dependencies.
I find that breaking down large projects into smaller linked files is the *most* impactful tip. It prevents a single 'god file' from becoming unmanageable.
Definitely. Component libraries are life-savers, but even then, things can get messy. What do you consider 'regularly' for auditing? Weekly, monthly?
Weekly for major projects, monthly for smaller ones, but honestly, it depends on the activity. If there's a big sprint, maybe even mid-sprint.
